Are you aware that a lot of the items we use on an everyday basis are actually carrying various toxins that can seriously harm our health?

Various studies have shown the widespread effect of processed and synthetic packaged items on our health. For instance, a large-scale study just found out that a phenomenal 90% of our popular bottled water brands have microplastics so small but harmful to us when the plastic enters the body. Orb Media, a journalism organization, requested the State University of New York scientists to focus on conducting a study on several brands of bottled water.

The researchers found out that popular bottled water brands carry as much as 10,000 plastic pieces per liter of water. This finding alarmed the World health Organization to announce that it will study and review the potential health risks of plastics in drinking water, even as water bottling companies stood by and defended the safety and quality of their products.

One can detox water bottles by heating and washing them once they have been used.

Meanwhile, another study from the University of Exeter supports the findings above. It discovered that 90% of teenagers are exposed to gender-bending chemicals from plastic in their bodies. The cause is the chemical Bisphenol-A or BPA. BPA is found in water bottles, plastic containers, and the linings of tinned food and drinks. BPA was also linked by recent studies to serious diseases like diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, arthritis, insomnia, etc. A very recent study (2016) discovered that two out of three canned foods have BPA.

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study discovered 93% of the population are exhibiting measurable traces of BPA. Dr. Channa Jayasena, a consultant in reproductive endocrinology at Imperial College London, said that “The risk of these endocrine disrupting chemicals is enormous. My concern is that by the time we work out what they actually do, they might be causing diseases we don’t know about.”

On the other hand, fruits and vegetables including unfiltered tap water might have “xenoestrogen chemicals” that cause breast cancer and obesity. Detox your body by drinking mainly filtered water which is known to remove harmful chemicals from the body. Experts also said that one can remove pesticides and other unwanted chemicals on greens and fruits by soaking them in water and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, or baking soda. You can also use veggie wash before cooking, hopefully the variety that does not have synthetic chemicals.

Another way to remove harmful toxins from our persona is to choose BPA-free sanitary products and table napkins. Naturopathic doctor said till receipts (from metro trains and underground train stations, including our LRT and MRT) have BPA which may be absorbed by our skin when we touch them. In fact, France is one of those countries that is clamoring for an EU-wide ban on till receipts with BPA, and have marked their till receipts with “sans BPA” (without BPA).

Women should also clamor for dioxin-free or organic sanitary napkins and tampons. Unbleached, uncoated table napkins are already existing in the Philippines.

Other everyday sources of toxic chemicals are plastic dental fillings. A study published in 2012 by the journal Paediatrics found that children fitted with fillings that have a substance with BPA exhibit more behavioral problems than their peers. Request your dentist for BPA-free composite fillings.

Likewise, skip the cosmetics and scented candles with fragrances. Or opt for cosmetics that only use organic and toxic chemical-free substances. Perfumes and scented candles using pure essential oils are a better alternative; you can also make some yourself.

We can’t avoid all of these everyday products in our society, but we can limit the use of them as much as possible. The lesson here is to be always mindful of the presence of these toxic chemicals that can offset our hormones and expose us to various diseases. To be informed is a step to being free of these toxic chemicals.
