Medical Cannabis is making waves in the medical world right now – and the stories are short of miraculous!

Currently, professional football and basketball players are openly lobbying for the use of medical marijuana and/or cannabidiol as a replacement of opioid painkillers to relieve anxiety and recover quickly. The issue among NFL players is the possibility of concussions. NFL now acknowledges that there is a link between football concussions and CTE or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease that boxers usually experience.

This link between concussions and CTE was established when bereaved family members donated the players’ brains. Out of 92 brains donated, 87 were diagnosed to have CTE. The end of life stories were also the same for most of the players — going almost crazy, attempted suicide, going homeless, etc.

Cannabis that has been used for treatment is from the plant, not a dangerous pharmaceutical formula that may affect users negatively in so many ways.

The Science of Medical Marijuana

Marijuana has been effectively tested and used to reduce chronic inflammation and curbing the pain associated with inflammatory-related diseases. Whereas, this is done through two major cannabinoids – cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Both THC and CBD have successfully tested to reducing inflammation related to a variety of conditions. In addition, CBD has been discovered to reduce joint inflammation and demonstrated effectively against the disease’s progression (Sumariwalla, et al., 2004) (Nagarkatti, et al., 2009). CBD was also tested to effectively reduce edema (Costa, et al., 2004). Cannabis is also able to lower digestive tract inflammation and improving the chances of a complete remission.

On the other hand, THC is able to lower the progress of atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease and a major risk factor for strokes and heart attacks. It also can reduce airway inflammation related to the flu virus.

Studies also show that medical marijuana is also helpful in certain types of cancers that are triggered by chronic inflammation (Nagarkatti, et al., 2009).

Recent studies indicated that Israel’s Tel Aviv University just published a cannabis study that shows that low doses of cannabinoids, specifically ultra-low doses of THC lends a protective effect against cognitive deficits from brain inflammation. And a separate study showed that THC acts as both a preventive and remedy against brain inflammation, especially when small doses are used.

Some of the conditions that medical marijuana has been proven to help heal are:

* Alzheimer’s Disease

* Movement disorders

* Arthritis

* Glaucoma

* Migraines

* Cancer

* Chronic Pain

* Depression

* Autism

* Multiple Sclerosis

* Muscle Spasms

* HIV/AIDS

* Fibromyalgia

* Insomnia

* Lupus

* Back Pain and

* Autism
